The Risks of Unauthorized Resellers

It may be tempting to buy from unverified third-party sellers to save a few dollars, but the "gray market" carries significant risks that can leave you with a useless device:

  • No Warranty Coverage: Manufacturers typically do not honor warranties for products sold through unauthorized channels. If the device breaks, you are on your own for repairs or replacements.

  • Device Lockdown (MAC Address Tracking): Manufacturers track devices via their unique MAC Address. If a device is identified as being sold outside of its intended region or through an illegal distributor, the manufacturer can remotely lock (brick) the device. Once locked, the hardware becomes permanently unusable.

  • Security Vulnerabilities: Unauthorized units are often modified with third-party software that may contain malware or spyware, putting your home network and personal data at risk.
